Rescuing Tidelia
A Daring Heist

February 1, 2010. Supper Time.

Plotting a Rescue

In the Parlor of Relative Safety, in Favian Manor, the crew plotted. (Genevieve, Adrian, Blake, and Arke. Also Daniel, Eudora, Jessica, and Mugsy.)

Eudora tipped off all the media outlets about what was going on, and Fortress Square is crawling with media and police. The captured nova Tidelia was to be moved from the top floors of Fortress Square to Quantum Labs. One convoy was run by Quantum Labs; a dirigible with Hammerhand and Dr. Kvassar and a bunch of drone aircraft, as well as three police blimps. The other by land, run by Seertech, with assault robots and police escort. Guarding Fortress Square itself was the main force of the Wilters, backed up by masses of police. It would not be easy to break her out!

Genevieve telepathically contacts Burninator, who was determined to rescue Tidelia, and set him to cause a distraction by setting the Wilters museum on fire. It was in Fortress Square, but down and to the side, out of the main security focus.

Genevieve telepathically contacts Hammerhand, who tells her that Dr. Kvassar was present and dangerous. So Daniel gets his gauntlets that were studded with warpstone. Hammerhand also warned them that Tidelia’s transport tube would be boobytrapped with a bomb.

Amy gets to the jet and is airborne, so if they need her for backup she’s ready.

Planning is cut short as the news indicates they are getting ready to load Tidelia and get moving. Genevieve looks to the future and sees Exitixe (Red Phantom) teleport in, shoot the phase disruptor that prevents teleportation, and pound some tracking bugs into Tidelia’s tank. Then she teleports out.

Assault on Fortress Square

Arke goes through the Umbra with a portable screen mirror, pops out in the room where they are keeping Tidelia, and sets it up. The rest of the crew pile in with Genevieve, and Adrian uses magic to shield them from attack while Blake pulls Tidelia out of her confinement (before she’s put in a transport tube.) Felton and Wilts cower, and the invaders escape with their prize as Dr. Kvassar pounded through the roof to intercept.

After a 15 second rescue, they evaluate Tidelia’s condition in the relative safety of a corner of the Warren in the Umbra (Adrian owes Arke a favor for using his interdimensional expertise.)

Next Steps

Tidelia was exposed to some infernal toxin that corrupted her energy instead of killing her; she cannot be cleansed any way but shamanistic cleansing or repeated maximum burning of her power. Tidelia briefly regains consciousness long enough to relate that she was poisoned and traced it back to Daggett Industries factory, she attacked the wife of the CEO and the next night was captured making a go at the CEO himself.

Genevieve takes Tidelia to the Mausoleum, where an old man in a mask agrees to look after her on the Ghost’s behalf. Then she and Adrian rejoin the others at Favian Mansion.

Burninator blew up the Wilters museum and escaped to the underground of Torpedo Bay.

Genevieve telepathically contacts Exitixe, who reveals that her involvement was because Crossfade and Growlback called her in to rescue a meta in transit (as they were once rescued.) She teleports away, having delivered that news.

The Brass Embassy

To find out more, Blake takes Arke and Jessica to the Brass Embassy. They enter through Sanctuary, and meet with Clark, the Overseer of the embassy. When Blake shares the flavor of the toxin with Clark, Clark points him to Dr. Porter, an entrepreneurial demon who started business before the embassy even opened. He may be making nevercold brass, which smelting is cheaper and more toxic here than elsewhere (closer to Hell.) He may be working with Daggett Industries. Clark gives Blake a nevercold brass coin.

To determine who might be in Hell needs a full name, something that belonged to the subject, and ideally a piece of the subject. Or, Arke needs much less. Arke does not like the idea of peering into Hell, and they take their leave of Clark. Jessica is freaked out by the Brass Embassy and never wants to return.

Artemis Seer Strikes Back

January 25-February 1, 2010

A WEEK OF DOWN TIME SLIDES BY. DURING THAT TIME

  • Blake generously rewards Smith for being a good sport about the gunmen that threatened his life.
  • Adrian meets with Duwayles (who introduces Arke, and his bodyguard Mugsy). Adrian works with him to put the back door to the Leatherbury Estate in the men’s room in the Kingsport Historical Society building; he takes a day trip up to Kingsport to finalize the process.
  • Emma proposes to Adrian! He agrees to marry her, they set up a May wedding.
  • Genevieve talks with the Ghost, and is relieved that she will not be banished for the role she played in the alien assault on Quantum Labs. She begins the slow process of healing Alice’s mind, after all the lobotomies. She also contacts the Shell Clan, and has some give-and-take to psychically locate the darkshell egg caches she sensed when she was the Queen of the hive mind, so the Shell Clan can wipe them out.

February 1

  • During the down time, Blake is exploring the city, but is ambushed by Blankwell—an inquisitor with the Order of Michael, purporting to serve the Archangel. They put him in a devil’s trap, shave him, carve sigils into him, even saw off one of his hands! They are trying to get past the Membrane, a psychic phenomenon that keeps demons on earth from remembering Hell. Their quest is to seal off Hell’s access to the world. As his sanity and life force ebb, Blake is rescued by Pillars and a demon hit squad. He wakes, reconstituted, in the Brass Embassy. Pillars reveals that the inquisitors found him because of an anonymous tip, and Pillars got an anonymous tip the next day (to rescue him.) Blake realizes Artemis Seer set him up for some pain. Pillars escorts him out the “servant’s entrance” that exits in Sanctuary, a cathedral turned into a nightclub. Blake celebrates his survival with a willing and pretty young woman, then settles at the bar…
  • Adrian, Arke, and Mugsy meet with Jessica at the yacht, Arke’s other agent. She operates somewhat independently. They go to meet Genevieve Malone at her house, and Arke explains he has been sent by the Warren, to reward her for her part in stopping the Ragnorok Wrecker and the Pytarian Disconnect. Arke will help her put Painkiller in a pocket dimension where he will be inaccessible and able to cause no harm. Also, Arke is to monitor the new Brass Embassy as best he can.
  • The butler escorts Jack Bower in; the policeman tells Genevieve her father died in a fire in her house. She goes to check it out, and looks back in time, to see Morton White and some thugs killing her father. The fire is an obvious arson.
  • Meanwhile the phone rings, Emma calls Favian Manor and reaches Adrian. His yacht blew up! He and Arke race over to see the obvious arson. A man in the crowd confesses that he did it, and because he made the bomb too big he was left behind to explain that they did torture and kill Hans before blowing the yacht up. Adrian promised to get even with Artemis Seer for this, and soon. Adrian follows the man, who goes into a gated community, to a helipad, and flies towards Quantum Labs. Jessica promises to look into it and find out what threats remain to Arke and, by extension, Adrian.
  • Genevieve psychically contacts Adrian, who takes Emma with him (and Arke) to use Favian Manor as a safehouse. Emma lets her servants go, with pay, until she needs them again. They all go to the Manor.
  • Graves decides to keep the crew safe by blackmailing Artemis Seer with some of what he knows about the illegal operations and funding Artemis Seer is using. This rattles Seer.

Tidelia Surfaces

On the news, Tidelia is captured returning to the scene of the crime after crippling Daggett Industries CEO John Sommerset. Wilters got her. She is kept in Fortress Square, Downtown. The pictures of her are horrific, she is scarred and hideous.

She must be rescued! Seer sends Morton White to offer her to Genevieve for six months of non-interference, and she turns him down. (Seer also approaches the Ghost, offering Tidelia, to settle Genevieve and her rabid husband down.)

Pillars also checks in with Blake, offering her “boyfriend” (the Director) to manage the heist. That’s a possibility, on hold.

Daniel favors hitting Fortress Square, Amy favors hitting the convoy on the road. Eudora finds out one convoy will be Seertech, the other will be Quantum Labs, and one will be a decoy.

Genevieve figures she’ll need to talk to Hammerhand in her identity as Isis; in that identity she rescued him from being experimented on by Quantum Labs, maybe he’ll see reason.

Army of Darkshells
Not what we expected!

Sunday, January 24, 2010

Blake returns to his home to get some rest, Adrian stays in a guest room in Favian Manor, and Genevieve catches some sleep with her husband.

Blake Gets a Ticket

Mid-day, Blake wakes and heads to Fortress Square. He talks to Camelbert at Five Stones, because he wants a ticket to the Grand Unveiling of the War Machine that night. Camelbert tells him he can have Bullthwaite’s ticket if he can talk the old man out of it. Blake does, handily meeting the time limit Camelbert set, and he goes to the event.

There is a truly stunning amount of security and fancy speeches, but even that is not as awe-inspiring as the War Machine itself; the size of an aircraft carrier, dotted with mecha, it hangs in the sky then sinks into the river to wait until called upon.

Blake has a charming conversation with Connie Dammers, a crack-pot journalist who is totally against War Machine and believes it is a terrible threat to the city. (Also, it turns out she dated a demon briefly, so she can recognize what he is. She is also poking potential machine people with her hat pin; she has found two at the event so far.)

Blake also gauges the reaction of the people at the event, seeing a range from greed to possess such power to alarm that anyone has it. He heads home.

Genevieve and Adrian Plot

Adrian contacts Adderwin’s mind, finding that he just flew in town by helicopter, ending the trace before he follows her home (he is also a telepath.) Discussing how to handle the darkshells, they send Daniel to talk to his contacts and get a big bomb—just in case.

Meanwhile Genevieve gets an invitation from Artemis Seer to have supper with him at the Arboretum, Downtown, with a great view of the unveiling. She agrees to go, and plans to take Daniel.

Adrian and Emma

Adrian borrows Daniel’s bug sweeper and sneaks up to Emma’s house. They have a playful afternoon and evening. He tells her to seek shelter at Favian Manor if something goes wrong (and he expects it to) and asks her to set up an attic as a “safehouse” for him. He goes over the house sweeping for bugs twice, and does not find any. He overnights there.

Genevieve’s Supper

Daniel and Genevieve meet Artemis Seer for supper; as a minor demonstration of power he clears the restaurant as soon as they sit down, and they have it to themselves for 90 minutes. He offers Genevieve a job helping with the psychic project, and gives her 24 hours to respond. If she walks away from his business, he’ll let her, but he will scale any retribution to match her efforts.

Genevieve warns him his plan is dangerous to the whole dimension, and she refuses to be intimidated. She realizes that Artemis Seer (the father) is working on building an alien army to subjugate this dimension, then others. Jeremiah Seer (the son) has War Machine. Even within the family, they are competing for power and glory!

On the way home, Genevieve leaves a lengthy voice mail for the Ghost with all she learned from the conversations.

Home Invasion

Daniel and Genevieve realize someone broke into the second floor of Favian Manor. They find a calm darkshell, and Genevieve’s limited mental contact reveals that the last order of Alice, the queen / hive mind, before she was sedated, was to seek out Genevieve. She accepts the role of queen, and with much trepidation, decides to lead the darkshells in a rescue to get Alice out of Quantum Labs.

Riding darkshells, she summons all of them she can reach to the salt marsh. There, she solidifies her hold on them, and sends them to the woods outside Quantum Labs. She goes to the nesting site and commandeers four praetorians, then leads them as well. She psychically reaches out to her allies to meet out there.

Blake’s Homecoming

Blake returns from the party to find Adderwin and some hybrid troops waiting for him at his house. Adderwin bluntly demands he call Genevieve and persuade her to come to his house. He refuses, shifts to demon form, and tussells briefly with the hybrids. Then he snatches Smith, their hostage, and escapes.

Adderwin’s psionic grip on Blake allows them to follow him, and a chase with stolen vehicles ensues. Smith is weirdly dazed, but Blake gets him in with a trucker who takes him to safety, so Blake can deal with the hybrids without impediment.

After some initial wins, he is still pursued when a ghostly plane interferes and pulls him out, aiding the police in bringing the hybrids in.

Alarmed by the attack, Blake calls Favian Manor and gets Daniel, who is rude and distracted. Later, Blake is contacted by Genevieve and the hive mind, and instructed on the location of the meet.

Assault on Quantum Labs

They all meet near Quantum Labs, outside the city. The alien darkshells mesh with Genevieve’s psionics, previous memories of infiltrating the place, and intrusive genius. They come up with a plan. While Adrian, Blake, and Daniel hang back and provide support in case hunter / killers fly out, the darkshells send in a stealth team in the sally port corridor and a massive frontal assault.

Casualties on both sides mount as the darkshells strike impossibly fast with uncanny skill and determination. Finally they get to Alice. She has been lobotomized over and over. Artemis Seer, directer of Quantum Labs, asks over the speaker whether Genevieve is demonstrating that she is on the team, or is defying him. She defies him, and he fills the facility with nerve gas that almost kills her and Alice, and finishes off many of the surviving darkshells.

Genevieve and some darkshells escape, and Genevieve calls for Blake to come help her while Adrian concealed the location from which Daniel sniped hunter-killers, which caused further damage to Quantum Labs with crashing.

Aftermath

They regrouped at the cabin in the clearing at the Chauncy place. Genevieve had to heal her brain or she would die; she could preserve her ability to be hive mind, or seal that capacity out. She sealed it out, and spent Fate to prevent these darkshells from being part of a hive mind ever again. She started work on possibly restoring Alice to sanity and wholeness, of not psychic power.

Blake felt a tremendous relief; the prophecy of doom, the dream of the Pytarian energy engulfing the dimension—finally, averted.

Pursuing Ryan Chaise

They follow Ryan Chaise to the Stone Garden in north Gantry. Genevieve slips in to talk with him, assuring herself that he won’t do anything stupid. He suggests he plans to leave town, and he knows the Gray Ghost is tracking him and keeping an eye on him. He leaves, and Genevieve takes the rest of her crew to Favian Manor.

Mind Melds

Genevieve takes the crew on a brief tour of the house then they go down to the basement where Amy Dobson finished setting up an area for Genevieve to connect to Daniel’s mind, then go looking for the psychic with the purple tattoos in her eyes.

Genevieve struggles, but eventually gets in touch with the other psychic (whose name is Alice.) They are forceful with each other; Alice feels she is not doing much wrong, and insists on her freedom, and threatens Genevieve. Genevieve tells Alice that she risks crashing the whole dimension, and that she is a puppet in a far more dangerous scheme.

Their chat is interrupted when one of the occupants of the hive mind umbrella Alice projects detects Genevieve’s mind, and Alice severs contact. The crew is shaken by the raw alien fury of the interloper, and concerned it might come for them.

Shell Clan

Adrian and Blake share the clue they got at the Silver Twilight Lodge event, that the Shell Clan have something at the root of the mystery. Genevieve reaches out to the Clan psychically, and meets with Blake S., who escorts them deep underground to an abandoned missile silo and command center.

They see a distressing tongue in a gravy of organic warpbroth that is still showing signs of life after being torn from its host days before. The creature that bore the tongue was killed by 3 of the Shell Clan in a 30 minute running battle. Blake S. shows himself, and agrees to take them to the corpse.

As they are examining the massive torn-up corpse, another of the creatures finds them and pulls in darkshells to pack-hunt the crew. They cannot escape, and in desperation they go to a very out-of-the-way underground hangar.

Battle!

In the underground hanger, they face off with the four-armed monstrosity, as well as some darkshells and two massive alpha-darkshells (praetoreans). They do battle, and Genevieve finds a mirror and can pull most of them out; Adrian refuses to run and leave their turtle ally behind, so he blows up the four-armed monstrosity and the psychic backlash disables the others. Adrian and the turtle escape up to the street above, the others get out through Genevieve mirror-stepping with them.

Aftermath

Shaken, they regroup and head to Favian Manor, where they discuss the situation. Genevieve fills in the Ghost, mirrorstepping to the Mausoleum, and talking about possible tactics. Then Genevieve summons Kryptma, who fills them in on the genestealer threat.

Genestealers are a multi-generational cult threat, so someone has been messing with this for a long time. And, the hive mind of the genestealers summons a greater, planet/dimension destroying threat from the outer dark. Kryptma will investigate and see what help she can offer; genestealers have never made it to Prime before…

A Casual Day

Adrian and Blake wake up and have a casual morning on the yacht. They head to Feducci’s and get $650,000 from the grateful front man for the Brotherhood of the Road’s local outpost. Then, on to Fortress Square. Blake sets up a bank account, then shoots the breeze with Five Stones.

Meanwhile Adrian takes Genevieve’s share and drops it off at her mansion, with Echran. They meet up at Fortress Square for a great lunch, then they go to Chatterly’s book store on Bollivar Road in Gantry. Blake makes arrangements to acquire a magnificent occult library with a focus on Edgarton.

They return to Blake’s brownstone mansion with their books and dig in.

Consulting

Genevieve gets a call from Captain Belsand, Downtown Precinct, to consult on a sensitive case. She goes Downtown and meets with Belsand, who reads her into the file. Dr. Elle Pardon was found murdered on the roof of her hotel in Fortress Square on the night of the 20th. Multiple assailants, but DNA analysis identified Hamilton Cord as being on the scene.

When the police pulled him in for questioning, he hospitalized two of them before being tazed into submission. He seems like a meta but the blood tests come back normal. He is uncooperative, but let slip he’s part of a biker gang called the Templar, their tag is a black pawprint.

Genevieve interrogates him and finds he is a member of a gang that takes up Wanderer (Jade Wolf, Michael Walks-Alone) philosophy and acts as vigilantes in the city. Their leader had a vision that this woman needed to die, and they needed to steal her pearls, and that a sketch of a guardian angel had to be left on her body.

Genevieve convinces Cord to confess to acting alone and committing murder. He is happy to go to jail. Genevieve doesn’t give Belsand much more to work with, but Genevieve does leave worried.

Daniel picks her up from Fortress Square and they go to the Brownstone Mansion.

Briefings All Around

Turns out Daniel was being stalked by a former SEAL, who he interrogated to find that Seertech is following him and building a file on his allies. Quantum Lab cameras picked up the i.d. on the dirigible and talked to Jacques, who gave up Daniel. Be careful now.

Genevieve shared what she learned from the biker. She needs to talk to the Gray Ghost, and prepare to telepathically contact the woman with the purple tattoos in her eyes. Daniel will go and get clinical supplies in case they need to “kill” Genevieve to break contact.

Silver Twilight Lodge

Meanwhile Adrian and Blake get all dressed up and go to the Silver Twilight Lodge for the annual ceremony for inducting new people that is in the evening and not at 3 a.m. Blake is impressed and joins up, and Adrian renews his membership. The leader of the Lodge, Mr. Scott, wants to confide in Adrian but not yet. Also, a corpse controlled on remote hands a cryptic card to Adrian; the root of the mystery is held by the Shell Clan.

Conversation with the Ghost

Genevieve mirror steps to the Mausoleum and finds the Ghost bandaging wounds, and heals the Ghost up. The Ghost was pursuing detail on the Pardon murder too, and found that the opium den where the biker gang leader went had a couch reserved for him. On that couch were needles with psychotropic drugs, and the attendant there was one of Painkiller’s agents (Needles) who could then give him suggestions.

The pearls were also a tracking device and bug. And the Ghost got the sketch of the guardian angel, so the cops don’t have it. Just barely too late to prevent the murder—as Painkiller intended!

Ghost is frustrated, not sure what to do about Ryan Chaise, the former Gray Ghost. Genevieve promises to talk to him and deal with him, and she secures the Ghost’s permission to reveal the identity to Blake.

Ghost gives Genevieve a palm radio, and Genevieve goes. She psychically contacts Burninator and asks him to be on standby in the neighborhood that night, in case it all goes wrong.

Stopping Ryan

While Daniel stands guard, Genevieve updates them on the identity of the Ghost and the previous Ghost, and talks about what to do next. They move to stop Ryan before he kills the werewolf gang, thus crossing the murderous line and being forever irreconcilable to the Ghost tradition and family.

As they close in on the suspected location of the gang, explosions seal off the werewolf lair under the bar. Genevieve gets in psychic contact with Ryan, who is badly hurt and crazed, and talks him down from killing them. She promises to take care of Painkiller, and Ryan stands down and lets the werewolf gang escape, he escapes himself (with the Gray Ghost trailing at a safe distance.)

Errands and Research

Adrian, Genevieve, and Blake discuss what to do next. A Pocketer shows up and asks Adrian if he knows where he wants his door yet; he does not. (They are disconcerted that the Pocketer just makes himself at home at Abraham Court.)

Genevieve goes to check out the history of the house at City Hall. She finds that it was built by Stacker Devrissian in 1842; he changed his last name to Tannerfeld, and that was the name of the house. It bounced around the family until 1932, and was purchased by Maloney and B real estate company in 1986 (and records from there are hard to get.)

Adrian gets a sketch book for noting the Enochian sigils in the Tannerfeld house, shopping on Bollivar Street with Blake. They get supper from a street vendor, then head to Five Stones.

Blake contracts on with Five Stones to be a local guide. Adrian talks to Bullthwaite and gets some insight on the Devrissian family (Order of St. Michael Inquisition supporters) and the Enochian sigils. The family disappeared around the 1850s, but their descendants hassled a meta known as The Enigmist in Edgarton decades ago.

Kennedov Island

Genevieve telepathically contacts them, and they all meet at a dock in Besquelle. They check in with the guard there, and get on a launch that takes them to the island, where they are escorted into a darkened castle to meet with Baron Kennedov.

Kennedov explains he does not like others knowing his family business, but when he is told about the “Lady Kennedov” walled up in the basement, he immediately makes arrangements to purchase the property, and sets Blake up in a different property. He thanks them for the information.

When they get to the docks, each is given a gold brick by way of gratitude. They return to the mainland. They drive to the Tannerfeld House, to find that Kennedov’s men already got there and secured it! So, they head to Blake’s new address.

The Brownstone

They are greeted at the Downtown residence by a servant named Smith, who shows them around the clean and aged mansion that is now Blake’s property. From the well-appointed parlor to the cleared third floor (for whatever purpose he chooses) to the master bedroom to the small library, they get a tour.

Blake retires for the evening to read histories on the city.

Errands

Adrian drops the gold bricks off at Mama Feducci’s, to have two liquidated and his cover the fees and donate the rest to the Brotherhood. He also updates Papa Feducci on the state of things they’ve been dealing with in the city.

Genevieve takes whiskey to Skiff and finds that the ninja have withdrawn. She will release the hostage, and Skiff will try to keep her safe with some assigned Bounders.

Genevieve goes home and talks to Daniel about releasing the hostage, and also checks in with Graves, who is working on his mysterious hobby behind closed doors.

Thursday, January 21

Genevieve reviews cases for the police, chats with Graves, and finalizes plans for pursuing the woman with the purple tattoos in her eyes that evening. Then she goes to the yacht, where Adrian gave Blake “Dreams and Fancies” as a gift to pass on to Kennedov; a strange magical volume of poetry.

Blake gives Camelbert (of Five Stones) a tour of his new house, and agrees to start hosting unique clients within the month. Then he goes to Camelbert’s tailor to get some new fancy suits.

Tracking the Sedan

Adrian and Amy park near where the sedan will be, and when it arrives, Adrian plants the transmitter on it. Meanwhile, Daniel, Genevieve, Blake, and Jacques (the Chauncy pilot of the dirigible) drift overhead with tracking gear.

After the woman’s appointed time for several hours after midnight down below with the darkshells, she returns to the car, and they follow her as the car tries to shake any pursuit. The quarry switches to a red van, and drives outside town to a small mechanic shop and gas station near Quantum Labs.

The shop is a back door, with a tunnel. However, the dirigible showed up on radar, and a hunter killer drone flew out and shot it down; they barely escaped, and Blake went back in demon form to rescue the stubborn pilot, who severely underestimated the danger.

Daniel ran off to draw fire, and the rest of them escaped to the car with Amy and Adrian. Daniel got trapped, and Genevieve used a gas station mirror within city limits to mirror step to where he was and pull him to safety as the Quantum Labs security hemmed him in.

As she went in after him, she almost ran afoul of weaver spirits stitching up reality in the Umbra around Quantum Labs and this node of Quantum Labs; escaping it was a near thing.

They discussed what to do next as they headed for the Prow of Revelations, but more than anything else, they were just relieved to be alive and together.

Terrible Secrets...

Rescue?

As Daniel and Amy finish pulling back from their positions flanking Oaken Arms, Genevieve takes Blake and Adrian and races for Fortress Square. They arrive, breathless, and Genevieve drags them through mirrors in the lobby to come out of mirrors on the 8th floor, overlooking a fancy dinner. They find the Cleaner, convulsing. He was put into a coma by a drug from Painkiller, who sketched a guardian angel in chalk over the fallen assassin.

Genevieve sees Painkiller’s surveillance gear, and telepathically scans for him. She finds him in the basement, but escape is a higher priority. Adrian lures the guards away with phantom noises, then they rappel out of the window using the Cleaner’s gear. Genevieve updates the Ghost telepathically as the Ghost fights to close the ninja trap in Torpedo Bay.

They relax at Adrian’s yacht, talking about Painkiller’s past. They watch the news and see that many ninja are captured on the ship.

Tuesday, January 19

As Adrian meditates, Genevieve dives into the books taken by the Dusk clan. She learns that Seertech trusts the Dusk Clan enough to pay them in stock, both laundering the dirty money and avoiding liquidity issues. Stockpiled dirty money is stored in safehouses (location unknown, but amounts listed) and a fictional person called “Ray Jackson” is getting most of the shares that go to the Dusk Clan.

Genevieve takes this information to the Mausoleum and meets with the Ghost, who asks her to work out the business of draining the Dusk Clan’s accounts. Also, the Ghost indicates it will not be long before some plan is in place to deal with the Chaise International business deal.

Adrian spends the day shopping for ancient movies with Emma, and Blake gets some new clothes and goes house hunting, finding a lovely place on Abraham Court. (On Five Stones’ recommendation, he contacts Maloney and B, a real estate agency; they send Karen to help him out.) He explores the place, charmed by its vague menace and obvious age, then signs a six month lease with Karen and takes possession. The basement is disconcerting, and Blake thinks he feels something almost alive behind one wall. Plus, there are strange symbols scribbled here and there.

News

That night, on the news, Daggett Industries reported the upcoming unveiling of a revolutionary product in the field of philanthropy. (Chaise International no longer has anything to announce. It was not in the news, but Daggett raided Chaise for this new product.)

In other news, 32 of the ninja were captured, framed with guns and drugs and child pornography at the barge. The sergeant in charge of the raid will likely get a promotion. The ninja are being kept in the detention center Downtown.

Genevieve is interrupted by a proximity alarm at the foot of the driveway. She goes to talk to Tarasuko, quasi-freelance Zen archer of the Dusk Clan, who wants to make sure Genevieve and her allies do not plan to escalate against the larger Dusk Clan. The negotiations end with cautious agreement to leave each other alone.

Contacts

Genevieve, Adrian, and Blake converge on the yacht. A Pocketer meets with Adrian, who is not ready to give an answer yet (so the Pocketer leaves.) They head to Settler, and talk to Skiff, who is really happy with the outcome. He will keep an eye on the ninja, who have pulled back to the Seertech facility in the face of their devastating setback.

Genevieve relieves Daniel as guard, and Adrian goes with Blake to check out his new house.

Abraham Court

Adrian finds Enochian symbols like those used by the Order of St. Michael, Inquisition. They are not supernaturally effective, but superstitious occult instead. Adrian enjoys a tour of the house and grounds. Both Blake and Olivia play the gorgeous grand piano in the music tower. Adrian scrutinizes the various occult signs all over the property, including an orrerry of Sirius the Dog Star’s affective sphere on astral currents.

Adrian spends the night in the tower bed, Blake dozes in a chair.

Wednesday, January 20

Genevieve joins them, looking the place over. She goes to the basement and senses some kind of energy behind the wall, and the basement is full of the corpses of spirits drawn and drained by an unconscious starvation.

She looks back in time and sees men in trench coats with torches manacling a woman in an alcove and walling her in. They call her Lady Kennedov! Then the vampire cries out to Genevieve, sensing her presence across time; as Genevieve returns to the present, something behind the wall shifts…

Rolling the Ninja

Prow of Revelations

The characters have a lengthy conversation about the possible leverage and tactics provided by knowledge of Hatamatsu’s grandson, and other various plots and issues at work in the city.

They decide to pay Hatamatsu a visit.

Oaken Arms

Genevieve goes in alone and unarmed, scouting the place even as she meets Hatamatsu for an early-morning negotiation. She tells him of his grandson, and asks him to give up his ambitions to get a seat on the Settler Council. He does not react well, and lets her leave alive but offers nothing else for her information.

Adventures in Mirror Stepping

Spooked that she might be followed, Genevieve broke into a gas station bathroom and mirror stepped out.

She dropped by the Mausoleum through the mirror, and met with the Ghost. She updated the Gray Ghost on the conversation with Hatamatsu and saw the Ghost loading up equipment for the ninja take-down. Genevieve downloaded the blueprints for Oaken Arms as of a year ago, and headed for home.

Genevieve stepped out in Favian Mansion and talked with Graves, who told her the cook had been suborned and was now gone. Graves talked with the other staff about accepting bribes to spy. Graves also mentioned he had some day trips lined up. Genevieve got some affection and some rest.

The Yacht

Blake woke from a nasty recurring nightmare, and spent the rest of the morning reading occult research until breakfast, when Adrian and Genevieve joined him. Genevieve called in Amy Dobson and gave her the blueprints and neighborhood map, so she could plan a tactical assault.

They make a plan. Amy trains Adrian on using the tradecraft laser cutter designed to penetrate bank vaults.

They get a note on the yacht that the Ghost is ready, and they travel to Oaken Arms and get in position.

Assault on Oaken Arms

Daniel breaks in from the roof of the building, Amy sets up a feint that seems like a massive frontal assault supported by snipers, and the rest break in the basement and cut through the bottom of the interior steel box.

The call comes in for the ninja, who go to spring the Gray Ghost’s trap. When they are gone, communications are shut down, and the three in the basement rush up and catch a guard, interrogating him to find out where Twinner (the money man) is hiding in the building.

They get to Twinner, easily subduing him and his ninja bodyguard, and Genevieve questions him. She finds out everything she wants to know, getting the ledger and also a secret document of offshore account information. Blake intimidates the ninja attackers trying to flank them, and they pull out.

Just as they are escaping, Daniel relays to Genevieve a desperate emergency call for help from the Ghost!

  • Blake made a deal with Pillars, to gain information on the ninja situation if he made an exchange for her. He went into an abandoned subway station and left a briefcase, taking an envelope; the other person at the exchange was odd looking and super-stealthy, only speaking in an uncanny whisper. The other person threatened to kill Pillars if she ever dealt with them again! When Blake gave Pillars the envelope, she gave him an envelope. She also told him that Jonin Carmine has Hatamatsu’s (leader of the Dusk Clan South Annex in Settler) grandson, and Hatamatsu doesn’t know it. Her “help” made their lives a lot more complicated as they tried to figure out what to do with that information.
  • Genevieve rigorously cross-checked it, and found out this seemingly simple family hostage situation was complicated. The boy’s mother was a CIA asset thought killed, the boy was raised with support from a trust fund set up by the Dusk Clan that Hatamatsu probably didn’t even know about.
  • Genevieve told the Ghost that the Cleaner is in town to kill him; the Ghost takes that under advisement and works with Genevieve on setting up a trap for the ninja so they can clear the ninja bid for power in Settler.

Genevieve calls in Amy and meets Blake and Adrian at the yacht. (Daniel continues guarding the rescued hostage in her concrete room in the Favian Manor basement.)

Amy starts training Blake on firearms and explosives. The characters discuss what to do with Pillars “gift” of information; they want influence over the ninja, without getting sucked into ninja politics. Also, how can they separate the ninja from their employers, Seertech? No one wants to be identified and targeted by ninja for their involvement, so the situation gets pretty complex.

Barnacle Bar

Genevieve is summoned to the Barnacle Bar, she talks to Swashbuckler. The Ghost asked Swashbuckler for modular office furniture and a tanker that the Swashbuckler was saving for a rainy day. These are being outfitted for the ninja trap. Swashbuckler is pleased to hear it is a trap to catch ninja, but he does want some compensation for his crew’s time, efforts, and his raw materials. Genevieve promises to talk to the Ghost about it.

Kryptma Returns

Amy and Blake are downstairs in the yacht, they hear someone upstairs, and investigate to find a very rude teenager. They suggest she leave, and she goes, stealing Hans’ coat. The girl, Chelsea, came in response to a summons from Genevieve, via bat skeleton (Mr. Kissynose.) She is NOT happy about seeing a demon on the boat.

Kryptma goes to Genevieve’s house and makes herself at home, grumpy at being summoned from her vacation in the Umbra to a snowy city. However, when she finally gets to have a settled conversation with Genevieve, she reveals that she is dating now!

Genevieve and Kryptma also talk about using the Pocketers to make an otherdimensional prison for… someone.

Exploring the Background

  • Chatterly, Adrian’s occult contact, prepares a presentation on the basics of familiars in many traditions. After seeing the overview, Adrian asks him to look into the arcanum tradition specifically, with shape-changing bird familiars. What are the consequences of severing the link? Chatterly agrees to dig further.
  • Blake starts investigating John Chow, and Genevieve takes over, using the Veil. She spends all day at it, digging into the secrets upon secrets.
  • Blake stumbles across Olivia/Snowfall in human form on the yacht, and has a long conversation with her. He finds out she doesn’t like Hell, has been forced to make hard choices, and is a brilliant violinist (who likes lo mein and is awfully sassy sometimes.) he realizes she is Adrian’s familiar, and is badly off balance. As she takes a nap, he heads upstairs and bonds with Hans, Adrian’s ship captain.
  • Adrian finally confronts his father, turning down his father’s demand that he comply with playing the role he was born to fulfill. Threatened with an end to his father’s secretive protection and assistance, Adrian turns away from his father. After the confrontation, he meets with Vaselma Duwayles, the Pocketer who is looking to repair his secret dimension, the Leatherbury House.
  • Genevieve meets with Burninator to heal his broken arm, and they share some smalltalk before she leaves. Burninator warns her the Wilters will try to recruit her again, and it may not be easy to say no.
  • As they converge once more on the yacht, Blake observes (with some pique) that his associates are not warning him about all the strange people in their orbit that show up unexpectedly acting rudely.
  • The group also talks over Pillars and her past involvement and suspect motives, as well as hearing from Adrian that he rejected his father’s offer. They end on a reflective note.

Ninja Check In...

Monday, January 11, 2010 IG. September 6, 2013 IRL.

Making a Plan

Blake left to deal with some issues. Genevieve and Adrian talk on the Prow of Revelations about what to do with the ninja, then they go to Settler and meet with Skiff. They ask the Bounders to scout the Dusk Clan South Annex. Turns out the fence, Oxley, lives in the secured housing in North Settler, Renewal Valley, with Seertech personnel. The other lives in Oaken Arms. Skiff is happy to help.

They take surveillance gear to Oaken Arms and infiltrate to an abandoned upper area of a building with a clear view of the apartment building. They note the building’s arrangement and defenses, how many people, and so on.

Tapping the Phone

Oaken Arms has its own diesel generator, water supply, and so on, but Genevieve figures they could find their telephone system and hack that. Skiff takes her to meet Old Man Sasparilla, who accepts payment in kisses and Oreo cookies. He helps them hack the line (he put it in, back in the day), and Amy (who has streetwise and speaks Japanese) takes notes for them.

Amy reports the conversations are mostly petty thuggery, the Japanese conversations are the exciting part; the “package” (hostage) is safe, check in every hour. Amy will monitor the conversation for them.

Checking the Tape

Genevieve takes the video surveillance tape to the Veil, runs facial recognition on it, and pulls up warrants for those who have crossed the law. They also notice that the money men come and go, and there is a car with diplomat plates, a NATO representative, Pele Nelwire. He is Japanese.

Battle and Rescue

Amy notes that something is going on right now, Burninator is fighting near the hostages. Uptown. Genevieve contacts him mentally, finds out he is fighting a big robot, Daniel and Adrien and Genevieve go to help.

They arrive, Burninator melted the robot and is hiding in the water under a dock with a broken arm. (Windup, a meta who builds robots to build banks; had flamethrower arms. Windup summoned him with a riddle in the paper classefieds.)

Genevieve detects the safe house based on the guards, and Burninator steals a jet ski to pull the police attention elsewhere so they have a shot at the house. Adrian uses magic to stealth in, past the crazy cat lady (powerful ninja) and knocking out another guard hiding in the corner of the ceiling, then makes off with the prisoner, levitating her and her chair and getting out.

Genevieve searches the prisoner for bugs, finding all of them. Daniel says he had her rescued, he is Belphegor working for the Lord of the Air.

January 13, 2010

Genevieve telepathically contacts Amy, finds out where her bug-sweeping kit is, Genevieve goes to Besquelle, to the investigative office above the Snake Eyes tattoo parlor. They finish scanning her, then find Eudora is staying there. Genevieve assigns Eudora to dig up something on the NATO represenative (at 4 a.m.)

Daniel sets the hostage up in the basement of the Favian Mansion and guards her. (The butler does not bat an eye as they drag in a head-bagged prisoner.)

Genevieve checks in with Amy to see what she has learned. There is a meeting between the Dusk Clan factions to discuss what happened, there is a lot of tension. They brought in the Cleaner to prevent this sort of problem. The ninja think the bugs are under a jamming field, they don’t think anyone could have found and removed all their tracers.

Genevieve, Adrian, and Amy go to find Skiff, Genevieve catches him up. They decide to be careful, and watch out for ninja aggression.

Genevieve goes home, so does Adrian; Hans asks Adrian how long he should be missing before Hans should worry. Adrian suggests a week.

Mid-afternoon, Genevieve has tea with Graves then drops the video off at the Veil. Researches in the Veil to see about the diplomat, he is alone with no “dirt” on his record.

On the news, Burninator was chased with boats and helicopters and so on, capturing Burninator remains the Wilters #1 priority. No mention of a giant robot.

Adrian spends the day with Emma, watching her video collection of an artist. She is considering where to donate it.

Eudora Found Something

Genevieve called the office and talked to Eudora, who found something; Genevieve goes to the office in Besquelle, the door is open and a ninja is tossing the place. Genevieve chases him, manages to keep up, and when he pulls a knife she pulls a gun. She memorizes his face and lets him go.

The office was searched, Eudora comes down from the hidden attic. Excited, she points out it is not the diplomat. It is the driver, whose background is classified. She was digging into it when ninja came to kill her, and he was splashing gasoline around the office.

Genevieve suggests they are looking for the Cleaner; Eudora has a file for the Cleaner, INTERPOL designation, and notes that he is INTERPOL’s 8th most wanted. Never kills anyone from more than 5 feet away, goes after hard targets, works with Triads, New York mobs, and so on; 23 high-profile hits. (Eudora has a recurring nightmare of car bombs.)

Amy comes over to help, then Genevieve goes to the Veil and looks up the Cleaner. Third generation; the first Cleaner was killed in an exploding building while hunting the Ghost. The second fell out of an airplane without a parachute. This would be the grandson! Maybe a candidate for Dr. Fell is calling in a heavy hitter, making a power play!

The diplomat is in town to attend a symposium for a select audience. Chaise International is unveiling a collaborative project with a pharmaceutical lab—not common knowledge. Genevieve wants to tell the Ghost about this in person…
